George Orwell's life was not simple. During his soldiering career on the battlefields of the Spanish Civil War, Orwell volunteered to fight for the Republicans against Franco's Nationalist uprising, so that he could defend Spain from being taken over by fascists. Moreover, Orwell came into direct contact with Stalin's men during the war, and as a democratic socialist, Orwell was extremely skeptical of Stalin's intentions and actions hence Orwell joined the anti-Stalinist unit.
Although Orwell was shot in the neck by a fascist sniper, he fortunately survives and leaves Spain. Carrying all of his lifelong hatred towards totalitarianism and fascism with him, Orwell decided to highlight how destructive and catastrophic these systems can be through the power of words and his literal works. Orwell's ultimate goal was to reveal the dark side of Stalin's plans and to provide the world a better overview of the different historical and political events that he has witnessed through the form of a relatable and easily understandable format as he believes that politics is an open subject that can be suitable for anyone at any age. Orwell's work allows him to not only express his personal opinions and experiences about these historical events and convey them to the public, it also allows him to communicate different ideas such as how power can lead to corruption. Moreover, Animal Farm was written also to warn the readers of the way they look at and their opinions on politics as Orwell said in the article "Politics and the English Language" that he believes that politics is the cause of all problems. "All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred, and schizophrenia"[12] Although Orwell didn't directly express his feelings to the readers through the novel, the readers can easily tell that Orwell is really attempting to change the reader's political views and maybe make the readers reevaluate their opinion on the different governmental systems such as fascism and totalitarianism.
